Bhubaneswar: They came in as good Samaritans — to lend a helping hand to remove the body of a person who had died after throwing himself in front a train at Bomikhal Tuesday afternoon. But by the time they left, the body was relieved of a bracelet and a ring.
The deceased, Tanmaya Kumar Das, 31, of Hakimpada in Angul was an engineer. His father is a noted advocate in Angul court. He had returned from Saudi Arabia around four months ago. He stayed with his wife at Heritage Apartment in Laxmi Sagar area here. His wife, who is also an engineer, works at Tata Consultancy Services.
Police have registered an unnatural death case (86/18) and started investigation into the matter. His family members were reportedly on their way to the city. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Capital Hospital as the post mortem will be done Wednesday.
An eyewitness said that he and his friends had seen a tense Tanmaya sitting on the ground near the tracks a few hours before the incident. He had twice approached and returned from the tracks after apparently failing to muster enough courage to take the extreme step.
The other tragedy unfolded as some persons were removing the body from the tracks.
Taking advantage of the commotion someone decamped with valuables the deceased had worn.
A big silver bracelet and some gold rings could be seen in some images taken at the moment the body was being removed. However, police personnel who seized the body found only the damaged mobile phone and his purse. The ornaments were missing.
