Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Rajmahal flyover area Saturday when motorists insisted on paying penalties through e-chalan system after they were caught for wrong side driving.
Situation worsened when the traffic police rejected their demands and threatened to seize the vehicles of the offenders.
Sources said the traffic personnel posted near Rajamahal Square caught many bikers driving on the wrong side. The violators were asked to pay fines, and they tried to pay it electronically as they did not have cash with them.
The violators told the officers that they would collect their seized documents from the police station later after paying the fine. But the police refused and insisted on payment on the spot.
After this, the traffic violators told the cops that they were ready to pay through debit cards. This was also refused by the cops as they did not have Point of Sales (PoS) machines with them.
The refusal of the cops to accept payment electronically enraged the motorists who insisted on payment through the e-challan system. Later, Capital Police reached the spot and pacified the public.
Odisha Police introduced the e-challan system in the twin cities December 10. Although two weeks have passed the system is yet to be implemented.
