Rourkela: Tension prevailed at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) after members of several workers’ outfits staged a demonstration Friday over the death of a worker due to gas leak when he was repairing a pipeline in the steel plant’s blast furnace three days back.
The agitators demanded adequate compensation for the deceased’s family and a permanent job to one of his family members. The deceased was identified as Subash Chandra Dash, a contractual worker.
Among the demonstrators were Subash’s family members, relatives, Sundargarh Industrial Estate Workers’ Association and RSP workers’ association.
A labourer had been killed while six others were rendered critical in a gas leak while repairing a pipeline. The demonstrators ghearoed RSP and SR company that had engaged Subash.
Work at RSP came to a halt due to the nuisance created by the agitators, sources said. Union members warned that they would keep up the agitation until compensation is provided to Subash’s family.
It may be noted here that Subash was killed while six others injured in a gas leak during a repair work at RSP. The injured were identified as Susant Mishra, Rajeev Kishore Singh, Dharmendra Kumar, Raja Singh, Prabhat Kumar and Harjit Singh. Union minister Jual Oram had paid a visit to the spot and inquired about the health of the injured.
According to sources, SR Blast Furnace had undertaken a renovation work at the steel plant. Contractor SK Singh had engaged contractual workers for the renovation work of some gas pipelines.
A gas leak occurred while the workers were repairing a pipeline. Soon, the workers experienced dizziness after inhaling the gas and experienced weakness. They were rescued and admitted to the ICU. However, Subash died in hospital. PNN
