You must have seen ‘milestones’ on the roadside, the small stone structures on which the distance to different places and the name of the places are written.
The upper part of these stones is painted with yellow, green, black and orange, while the lower part of all the stones is painted with white. But do you know why these stones are of different colours?
Although not much attention is paid to anything other than the distance, you should know that these stones of different colours are very useful.
While walking or driving on the road if you pass by a milestone whose upper part is yellow, it means that you are on National Highway (NH).
When you see a green milestone on the road, it means you are on state highway.
Similarly black or blue and white striped stone on the road it means you have entered a big city or district.
When you see an orange colored milestone it means you are on a village or village road.
So make sure you pay close attention to the side of the roads whilst driving around the country!
