Berhampur: Three policemen were seriously hurt in an attack by a crowd near Gobindpur square in Berhampur area of Ganjam district Tuesday morning. The cops were rescued and taken to the Mohana community health centre (CHC) by media personnel. Their condition was stated normal after treatment.
Trouble started after a cashew-laden truck was waylaid and its driver robbed by a gang near Taptapani ghat Monday night. The miscreants beat up the driver and took away all his cash and other valuables. Locals heard about the loot Tuesday morning. They gathered at the square and blocked traffic, demanding arrest of the miscreants.
The crowd blocked the Gobindpur-Jakarapali road by burning tyres and placing boulders. A team of three policemen rushed to the spot. For unspecified reasons, the crowd attacked the cops and pelted stones at them. Senior police officers reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
