Bhubaneswar: The Khandagiri Police Thursday sought the court’s permission to take Nrushing Nayak, a former Odisha University of Agricultural Technology (OUAT) employee, on remand for three days. He was held for manufacturing illegal firearms and explosives at his official quarters.
Nrushing was nabbed by the Khandagiri Police who accidentally came across the gun manufacturing unit April 15.
Nrushing, who was a resident of Sarakantara village in Khandagiri police station limits, was working as maintenance supervisor at OUAT. He was suspended recently by OUAT authorities.
Sources said the police sought three-day remand to interrogate Nrushing about his illegal arms trade. The police will also try to find out details about the persons who used to buy guns and explosives from him.
The sleuths will interrogate him to know the sources from where he used to procure raw material for making the firearms and explosives.
Police arrested Nrushing from his official quarters (1 R-1/7) in OUAT staff colony where he had been staying for around 20 years.
The Commissionerate Police stumbled upon Nrushing’s illegal business when some locals informed the police of an accidental explosion in his house April 14 night. Police found a room closed from the outside and were shocked to find half-made pistols and material used for making bombs.
Nrushing’s elder brother died a few years ago while he was trying to throw bombs at their enemies during a fight in his village.
Despite being a government employee Nrushing had a long criminal record and was engaged in the illegal manufacture of firearms in the residential quarters of a prominent state-owned institute.
