Bhuban: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 60-year-old widow had to walk 5km to a police station after she was assaulted and thrown out of the house by her son and daughter-in-law Saturday.
Acting on a complaint by the victim, police registered a case and launched a probe. According to sources, the elderly woman – Jui Mehena of Bhuban NAC Ward 11 in Dhenkanal district – has a son Ranjan Mehena.
With much difficulty, she took care of Ranjan after her husband’s death and later got him married. However, Ranjan’s attitude to his mother changed after marriage. He often tortured her over petty issues and used to snatch her ration and old-age pension money.
Over a petty issue, Ranjan and his wife assaulted the elderly widow Saturday and later, threw her out of the house. Left with no option, the woman walked barefoot to the police station, 5km away from her house, and lodged a complaint against her son and daughter-in-law.
Residents, incensed over the way the widow was treated, demanded stringent action against Ranjan and his wife. “A case has been registered and action will be taken as per law,” said Bhuban IIC Pramod Kumar Lenka.
