Thunderstorms and rain expected in state till March 21

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall activity in Odisha with thundershowers and lightning in some parts of the state for five days beginning Sunday.

“The cyclonic circulation extending up to 0.9 km above the mean sea level over south Odisha and the neighbourhood now lies at 1.5km above mean sea level over Vidarbha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh. Under its influence, sporadic rainfall activity with thunderstorm and lightning in most parts of Odisha will continue for five days till March 21,” a release by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said Sunday.

According to the release, light rain or thunder-shower is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Khurda, Nayagarh Kandhamal and Ganjam on March 17.

On March 18, light to moderate rain or thunder-shower is likely some places over the districts of north Odisha and at a few places over the districts of south Odisha. Besides, thunder and squall with lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of  Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul and thunderstorm with gusty wind and lightning at some areas over the remaining districts of north Odisha and Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts  of south Odisha.

Apart from this, heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Dhenkanal during the period.

On March 19, light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at a few places over north Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of south Odisha with thunderstorm, gusty wind and lightning warning at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, Khurda and Nayagarh districts.

There will be light rainfall, thundershower at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Ganjam and Gajapati on March 20. However, there is no weather warning for the day.

On March 21, light rain or thundershower is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal with thunderstorm, gusty wind and lightning at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrakh, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal and Khurda.
