Cuttack: Thirty-six sniffer dogs from across the state Monday participated in the 63rd professional championship of Orissa police and displayed their proficiency in detecting suspected articles and explosives.
The dogs from several districts were called one by one to showcase their talent at the event. Tiger, the skillful dog from Koraput which had traced out a tiffin bomb from the forests two years ago, also participated in the event. It had also found a pistol from G Udaygiri forests earlier, his master informed the media.
Similarly, Chase, a dog from Bolangir, also showed its expertise in finding out explosives from under the ground. Chase had earned a name when it detected explosives at Khaprakhol forests.
Similarly, Safi from Cuttack also displayed its technique of finding out explosives. Safi has been very instrumental in detecting detonators and other explosives in Maoist-hit districts. The skilful art of Angel, the dog from the silver city, drew the attention of many when it exhibited the skill of detecting intoxicants.
The Crime Branch ahs 14 sniffer dogs and masters have been appointed to take care of the canines. Each dog’s daily food includes 250 gram of rice, 100 gram of vegetables, 500 gram meat, 500 ml milk, chapatis made from 250 gram of wheat and a boiled egg.
The dog squad has been operating with the Crime Branch successfully since 1961, said officials. ADG (Crime Branch) BK Sharma said it would be proposed to the state government that two dogs each be deployed in each districts and six in every range. Out of 871 cases in 2013 for which the dogs were roped in, clues were found through the dogs in 349 cases. The sniffer dogs had done a commendable job in 84 cases.
