Berhampur: K Suresh, a plastic trader here at Bada Bazaar area allegedly attempted suicide Friday after he was accused of sodomising an eight-year-old boy.
“After his disgraceful act of forcing an eight-year-old to have ‘unnatural sex’ with him became public he tried to end his life by consuming poison,” a local said.
Suresh was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and was later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after his condition worsened.
Sources said, the incident occurred July 24 while the minor was playing near Suresh’s store. Seeing the boy alone, Suresh lured the boy into his shop where he allegedly sodomised him.
He then convinced the boy not to reveal the incident by giving him chocolates. Even as the boy remained tight-lipped after the incident, his parents noticed an unusual change in his behavior. On being enquired, the boy narrated his ordeal before his family members.
Soon, the incident spread tension in the area and became public. Out of public stigma, Suresh consumed poison kept in his house to end life.
Bada Bazaar police has registered a case under Sections 377 and 325 of the Indian Penal Code. As per Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the minor boy’s statement was also recorded by the Additional District Judge (ADJ), Berhampur Friday.
Further steps will be taken after there is improvement in the health of the accused, police said.
