Keonjhar: Forest officials have recovered the carcass of a tusker from Manikpur village in neighbouring Jharkhand, near the Joda border of Keonjhar district. Local residents spotted the animal’s body near a mango grove on the village outskirts Thursday morning and alerted the forest officials. Officials from the Chaibasa forest division in Jharkhand rushed to the spot, examined the situation and seized the carcass before launching an investigation.
Preliminary reports suggest the elephant might have died due to old age. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the availability of the post-mortem report, forest officials said. Sources said that the tusker had frequently strayed from Jharkhand into the Champua forest range in Keonjhar district, causing extensive damage to crops and property in villages such as Godhuli and Jagannathpur under the Champua NAC limits.
