Bhubaneswar: Two incidents of thefts occurred in Khandagiri area on the intervening night of November 24 and 25 involving loss of over
`5 lakh.
Sabar Rout of Dumduma Phase-V lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police Friday alleging that some miscreants trespassed into his rented house (Plot No. 238) in the wee hours of Friday and locked him and his family members in their bedrooms.
“We were not aware that the miscreants had trespassed into our house, which is on the ground floor, as we all were asleep. They stole my wallet which had three `2, 000 denomination notes, one new `500 denomination note, five `100 rupee notes, and two mobile phones. The miscreants then went to the first floor where tenant Alok Mishra resides. Alok and his family were away in Phulnakhara at the time of the incident,” Sabar, who stays on rent in Rasmita Panda’s house, told this newspaper.
“Alok’s wife said the miscreants had stolen cash and gold ornaments worth `4 lakh. They have also stolen US dollars amounting to at least `70, 000 from their house. Alok’s son is a software engineer and is employed in the US,” he said.
Sources said the miscreants then reportedly consumed alcohol in front of Sabar’s house and left behind empty packets of chips and emptied bottles of soft drinks.
Another woman of Dumduma Phase-II area alleged some miscreants trespassed into her ladies corner store shop and decamped with garments and other articles worth at least `70, 000.
“Some miscreants trespassed into my shop and stole garments and other articles. My husband is out of city and once he comes back, we will lodge a complaint with Khandagiri police in this regard,” Susanti Behera told this newspaper.
However, Khandagiri police officials defended themselves saying the patrolling in the area on the intervening night of November 24 and 25 was affected due to the scheduled visit of BJP national president Amit Shah in the morning.
“At least 20 home guards patrol in Khandagiri area. However, all the home guards were asked to report at Baramunda ground from 6am Friday ahead of the BJP leaders’ visit there at 11am. The home guards had to skip their night shifts due to this reason,” cops said.
Lawyer Subash Mohapatra, who stays in Khandagiri, told
Orissa POST that crimes in the area are being reported daily.
Police sources said Khandagiri police station are getting huge money from the hospitals and petrol pumps in the area in a bid to provide preferential security.
In November, three bike-borne miscreants had snatched `1.25 lakh from a finance company official at gunpoint in Khandagiri area, and the cops are yet to crack the case.
Meanwhile, Khandagiri police have said they visited the spot Friday to investigate the case.
