Anugola: Two kanwariyas were swept away by strong currents in the Lingara canal near Tipirisingha in Anugola district while collecting water to offer to Lord Shiva during the holy month of Shravan, officials said Monday.
One of the two kanwariyas, identified as Smruti Ranjan, was rescued by fire service personnel, while an operation was underway to trace the other person, fire service officials said.
Ranjan claimed the incident took place due to the sudden release of water from Derjang Dam.
Smruti was taken to the Angola district headquarters hospital for treatment. The other remains missing, locals said.
The incident took place when the group of devotees was collecting water for the ritual. The two men reportedly lost their footing and fell into the fast-flowing canal.
A fire services team, police personnel and local divers launched a search operation for the missing devotee. Rescuers were searching downstream amid strong currents.
