Two Maoists gunned down in Odisha, huge cache of explosives seized

Malkangiri: Two days after a woman Maoist was shot dead in an encounter in Kandhamal district, two more Maoists were gunned down by security forces in a gunfight in Swabhiman Anchal (earlier known as Cut-off Area) in this district Sunday.

A huge cache of explosives and daily need articles used by Maoist were also seized by the security personnel from the spot.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of armed Maoists in Gajalmamudi and Singaram jungles, a joint team of local police, Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) carried out a combing operation in the jungles.

Seeing the security personnel marching towards them, the ultras opened fire at them. In retaliation, the jawans also opened fire, a police source said.

The exchange of fire lasted for some time and two extremists were shot dead in this gunfight. Later, the ultras moved backwards and escaped into the jungles. The identities of the deceased ultras are yet to be established.

The jawans are learnt to have been intensified the combing operation in the area.

Notably, a woman Maoist was killed during a combing operation jointly conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) in a jungle near Gochhapada village in Kandhamal district Friday. Two firearms and four rounds of live bullets including Maoist literature were seized from the spot during a thorough search after the encounter.
