Bhubaneswar, March 23: The India Meteorological Department here has planned to set up seismograph stations in Rayagada and Jharsuguda districts to detect possible earthquakes. The Met office will also upgrade the existing one in the city.
The seismograph stations will be set up at Kolnara in Rayagada and Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda districts. “There is a need for at least three such stations in the state to map earthquakes. There is only one such facility in Bhubaneswar now. Met office has been planning to have two more stations in the state,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
The existing one in the city has the facility of communication and recording. Another digital seismometre will be installed here to map frequency of 0.1 to 100 gauges of motions of the ground. “The Met station here will soon have all the three latest technologies to map even a minor tremor whereas the communication machines have already been installed at the proposed stations. Now, the recording device will be installed in the second phase,” said Sahu. Orissa falls under two earthquake-prone zones. The state comes under Zone III and Zone II out of five zones across the country. The capital city and Cuttack fall under Zone III which more dangerous than the other zone.
The work on the Doppler radar installation at Paradip and Gopalpur is on the verge of completion and is expected to be functional by June this year.
