Rourkela: With a large number of young bikers using pressure horns on their motorcycles these days, people, especially senior citizens in the Steel City are having a harrowing time due to increasing level of noise pollution, according to a report.
Their high-decibel sound also adversely impacts the health of patients in the city.
As if that was not enough, some young motorcyclists tag some fancy tools to their silencers that generate deafening sound making life miserable for co-bikers and commuters.
Inspection by the police once in a while doesn’t yield any results, locals alleged. The ‘road Romeos’ continue to wreak havoc in the city, they added.
Some take pleasure in making commuters awe-struck by creating such terrible noise seeking to grab attention. Often the sound generated by these tools leads to freak mishaps, Himanshu Nayak of Udit Nagar said. The need of the hour is to have regular police surveillance at all major intersections of the city, he added.
Traffic inspector Rabi Narayan Padhi said some college-goers fit extra tools in the silencers of their bikes. They keep the silencers in normal mode near police stations. Once they are beyond the reach of police, their bikes generate horrifying sound with the activation of the pressure horn. They ride the vehicles in such high speed that it is difficult for police to catch hold of them. Still the department would try to make them pay for their pranks, the inspector said.
Narayan Pati, a senior citizen of Sector-19, said he has travelled several countries including Malaysia and Singapore. “People in these countries never sound horn to keep the noise pollution in control. Our people should also learn from them. The road Romeos who are involved in such practice should be held to account,” Pati added.
Others won’t dare to create such deafening sound once exemplary actions are taken against a few, he added. PNN
