Cuttack: The district and sessions judge court here Wednesday concluded hearing on a discharge petition filed by Abdur Rehman, a suspected terrorist of Al Qaeda in Indian sub-continent (AQIS), and reserved the verdict.
Rehman was brought from Choudwar jail by the Crime Branch under tight security and produced before the district and sessions judge Satyanarayan Mishra. Mishra conducted the hearing on the discharge petition filed by Rehman challenging the charges framed against him. Mishra will pronounce the verdict September 13.
During the hearing, Rehman’s counsel presented arguments in support of the discharge petition. “There is no adequate evidence against Rehman regarding his involvement in terror activities. In this case, it is illegitimate to frame charges against him,” Rehman’s counsel contended.
Presenting counter arguments, public prosecutor Ajit Kumar Patnaik, on behalf of the government, said: “Rehman was involved in terror activities and CB has collected enough evidence against him during the investigation. He used to provoke people for Jihad. The accused had also tried to send some youth to Pakistan to join terror group. However, they were arrested from Delhi.”
Patnaik further said, “The arrested youths had admitted that Rehman was their master on the basis of which police had arrested him. He had also visited Pakistan, but destroyed all records related to it. The CB also found his link with a bomb explosion in London. Besides, huge cash was transferred to his bank account from abroad. So his discharge petition is not acceptable.”
Rehman was arrested from Paschimakaccha village in Jagatpur police limits December 15, 2015 and crucial documents and records were seized from him. Jagatpur police had registered a case against him. Later the CB took over the case.
