Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Saturday said that all jails in the state would have videoconferencing facilities by year-end.
Speaking at an event organised here Saturday to hand over appointment letters to 238 new warders, Naveen asked the prison administration to follow all the best practices in jail administration and adopt the good practices of other states.
“I compliment the prisons directorate and the Home department for successfully completing the recruitment of warders. With the availability of 238 warders the services inside jails will improve and rehabilitation of prisoners will be expedited,” he said. Stating that warders are the most important functionaries in jail administration, Naveen asked the prisons directorate to provide quality training to them in correctional services.
As prison management and correctional services are an important part of the criminal justice system, it has great significance in the reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners, the CM said.
There is no overcrowding in Odisha jails as efforts are being made to provide legal aid to inmates.
There are also periodical reviews at the district level, judicial, civil and jail administration for under trial prisoners and biannual review by the State Sentence Review Board, the Chief Minister pointed out.
The CM said the government is trying to improve facilities inside jails like construction of new cells for inmates, renovation of kitchens, drainage, lighting, provision of purified, chilled drinking water, installation of telephones and other things needed for prisoners.
