Keonjhar: Even though it was located in a remote village in Telkoi block of this district, Radhakrushna Government High School has left behind all other schools including those in the city by raising the highest amount of Rs 2.91 lakh under ‘Mo School Abhiyan’.
The school, about 60-km from the district headquarters and 12 km from block headquarters, is located in Sibanarayanpurgoda village, with hills and jungles surrounding it.
Established in 1980, the school has a well maintained garden with a boundary wall, manicured greenery, neat and clean surroundings, a peaceful environment and everything that can feature in the wish list of any school.
When asked about this enviable achievement, Hrushikesh Mohanta, the teacher in charge of ‘Mo School Abhiyan’ said it was nothing but the affection and attachment of former students for their alma mater.
“A meeting was convened of former students, and they were asked to do their best for their alma mater,” he added.
Giving examples of how former students are still unable to sever the umbilical cord, he named Asanbandhu Dehury, who despite being a truck driver contributed Rs 5,000 to the fund.
Headmaster Khageswar Mohanta, who was also a student of the school, donated Rs 30,000. Hrushikesh Mohanta gave Rs 25,000.
Alumni like Anam Charan Munda, a railway employee, Chandrabhanu Nayak, an Army man, and Rasananda Mohanta, a pharmacist, contributed Rs 10,000 each. Similarly, Biswanath Sethy, a small shopkeeper, Jayaram Sahoo, a contractor and some others gave Rs 5,000 each.
There are 206 government schools, 40 aided high schools, 156 block grant high schools and 26 high schools under the SC/ST Department.The Abhiyan was launched June 6, 2018, and so far 43 schools have joined it, and Rs 20 lakh has been raised so far.
