Gop: A male deer was rescued from a pond in Tarangia village under Gop police limits here Monday morning.
According to sources, poachers start chasing the animals in the area when the water problem becomes acute during the summer. Although villagers have repeatedly complained to the Forest department regarding poaching activities in the area, the issue has always been neglected, they alleged.
Locals found the deer in a pond Monday morning and informed forester Biraja Kumar Mohapatra, who called fire brigade to rescue the animal. A team led by Sukanta Kumar Jena rescued the deer and sent it to Gop veterinary hospital for treatment as the deer had injuries.
Locals said, the animal may have escaped from the poachers’ net as plastic wire was rolled around its neck.
Gop ranger Kanhu Charan Sethi said, the deer will be released after its health improves.
Puri district forest officer (DFO) Harshavardhan Udgata said that no one had brought any complaint in this regard so far. “However, I will look into the matter,” he said.
