Rayagada, Feb 17: With summer approaching fast and the scarcity of drinking water in the area still affecting their lives, a group of villagers of Jamadeipentha under Rayagada Sadar block met the district collector Shashi Bhushan Padhi Monday and apprised him about their problems.
The villagers complained that around 2,000 residents of the village do not have access to better drinking water facility and the two out of three tube-wells provided by the district administration earlier have become defunct.
“Due to this, we are all dependent on only one tube-well which is not sufficient for our requirements,” a villager said.
The villagers say that the ground water level in the area has also drastically gone down in recent years. At present, water is available 400-ft below the surface.
“We are not even able to constructing more tube-wells because of this and we don’t have any alternative water source,” he added.
A few months the administration had started the construction of a water purifying plant in the area to supply water of River Nagabali to the village at an estimated cost of `50 lakh.
However, the project is yet to be
completed.
The villagers fear that the government may ask to return the funds sanctioned for the project if the administration fails to utilise it by the end of the current
financial year.
The villagers urged the collector to intervene in the matter and take immediate steps to address their concerns.
“We will look into the matter and take steps for early completion of the project,” Padhi assured the villagers.
