A viral video of singer Zubeen Garg has surfaced on the internet. It shows the popular Assamese musician jumping into the sea from a yacht in Singapore, just moments before tragedy struck.

Confusion followed soon after. At first, organisers of the North East India Festival (NEIF) claimed Zubeen died while scuba diving. Later, it was clarified that he was on a yacht trip with members of the Assamese community. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that “Zubeen had removed his life jacket before taking a swim, despite warnings from lifeguards.”

Soon after, lifeguards found him floating. They tried CPR, but it was too late. He was declared dead at a hospital.
His sudden death at 52 shocked the entire nation. Zubeen was best known for his hit song Ya Ali from the film Gangster. Over three decades, he had sung in more than 40 languages, blending folk, classical, and modern music. He was not just a singer, but also a composer, actor, and director, who touched countless lives with his art.
Back home, Assam plunged into grief. People gathered at his Guwahati home and across towns to mourn their beloved “Zubeen da.” His mortal remains are expected to arrive in Assam today, with last tributes planned at Sarusajai Stadium.
