Berhampur: Acting on a tip-off, city police arrested a dreaded criminal after firing at his knees during an encounter in Digapahandi of Ganjam district Tuesday.
The history-sheeter identified as Shyam Sundar Goud alias Cheru of Lathi village collapsed from his motorcycle after two rounds fired by the police hit him on his knees. He was later arrested.
Three policemen including Sadar police station IIC Shiba Shankar Mohaptra and two constables of the city police sustained injuries during a scuffle with Goud.
After the encounter, police rushed Goud to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
According to reports, the police were tipped off that Goud and four of his accomplices were on their way to some place on Tatadapali-Barapalli road.
A police team soon chased them but Goud and his men tried to escape by hurling bombs and firing at the police team.
The police team retaliated and fired two rounds at Goud while his accomplices managed to escape.
Profusely bleeding Goud collapsed on the road. Mohapatra and two constables managed to overpower him after a brief scuffle.
According to the police, Goud is a notorious history-sheeter and was on the list of most wanted criminals of Sadar police station.
He had eight criminal cases in his name out of which two were registered in Sadar police station.
Reports said this is the second encounter by Sadar police IIC and eighth by the Berhampur police district. Mohapatra was also injured while arresting another most wanted criminal, Endela, May 23, 2016. PNN
