Bhubaneswar, Feb 17: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has notified user charges for door-to-door collection of solid waste from residential and commercial buildings in the city.
The draft proposal of BMC has been notified following the nod of the law department, which approved the draft after substantial changes.
Earlier, BMC council had unanimously approved the draft proposal of levying user fee and administrative charges on people for rendering solid waste management (SWM) service September 11, 2014. The draft got the green signal of the housing and urban development (H&UD) department December 6 last year from where it was forwarded to the law department for its consent.
The circular has been notified by the civic body, but is yet to be made public.
“We have notified the user fee circular recently. This is likely to be enforced by the end of February or March. BMC officials are yet to figure out the modalities of collection of charges from the public. A few rounds of meetings would be chaired by municipal commissioner to implement the modified notification,” BMC additional commissioner D Brundha said Tuesday.
Brundha further said there are no hurdles in the enforcement of the notification.
With this, BMC has become state’s first civic body to notify user fee collection of SWM.
Slum dwellers who were identified under the centre’s Rajiv Awas Yojna (RAY) till 2013 will have to pay Rs 50 per month towards removal of trash, according to sources. People residing in one, two and three BHK apartments are likely to pay Rs 50, Rs 100 and Rs 200 per month, respectively, to sanitation agencies lifting waste.
It has also been decided to slap a fine of Rs 200 as administrative charges on those who carelessly dump garbage on the streets and at public places. Those stacking up construction material and demolition debris will have to cough up to `3,000 for per tractor/truck trip.
