Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: Utkal University vice-chancellor Ashok Das at a meeting with visually-impaired students Friday said the varsity will strive to make access easier to differently-abled students.
Das was responding to a memorandum submitted by the Orissa Student Union of the Visually Impaired. The union had pressed for 10 demands to ensure visually-impaired students are able to continue their studies without any difficulty. The union in their memorandum had asked for an equal opportunity cell, a disability studies department, unlimited internet access, special scholarship scheme, a special hostel, incentives for scribes, and digitisation of library books.
“I agree to many demands of the memorandum and will try my best to make it available to the concerned students. But there are many subjects which are not under my jurisdiction. Some of the subjects pertain to the state and Central government and it is up to them to find a solution. On many fronts, work is already going on and the students will see the results in the days to come,” Das said.
Das also said all possible help has been provided by the varsity according to the prescribed rules and regulations as set by the governments concerned.
Additional director, state education department, Amiya Kumar Mohanty while speaking on the occasion, said, “I assure the students of all possible aid from the state government. Officials will look into the demands made by the union seriously and will try their best to find solutions.”
Panchanan Kanungo, former state finance minister while interacting with the students said, “There is a tremendous treasure of talent inside you. Sharpen your skills and let the talent come out.”
