Nayagarh: In yet another alleged dowry death, a woman was beaten to death by her in-laws in Champtipur village under Itamati police limits in Nayagarh district Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Padmini Pradhan, daughter of Rajib Pradhan of Sakeri village under Odagaon police limits. According to reports, Padmini got married to Tapan Kumar Swain, 35, a resident of Champatipur village 11 year ago.
At the time of marriage, dowry was given as per the demand of the groom’s family. After a few months into their marriage, Padmini secured a job as a teacher. Even after this, her in-laws kept on pressurising her demanding more dowries. When Padmini informed them that her family members declined to provide more dowries, she was tortured by her husband and in-laws, Padmini’s family members alleged. Tapan, who is a police officer, had a fierce argument with Padmini over money matters Thursday night. The feud took an ugly turn when Tapan and his mother mercilessly thrashed Padmini, Thursday. Padmini reportedly succumbed to the severe beating.
On being informed by villagers, police arrived at the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. Police detained Tapan for interrogation and launched a probe, along with a scientific team, into the circumstances that led to Padmini’s death.
