Chhatrapur, August 11: In yet another incident of failure of the government in ensuring institutional delivery, a woman gave birth to twin girls on a road on the outskirts of the town Tuesday afternoon.
Though the government has made arrangement for 102 ambulance to carry pregnant women to hospitals, Rebati, wife of Sanjay Behera of Humbar walked 5 km distance to the sub-divisional hospital here for check up. She consulted Dr Itishree Mishra of the hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology department. After conducting an ultrasound, Dr Mishra told her that expected delivery date was October 10, said Rebati.
Rebati then started walking home from the hospital on Kumarbegapalli-Humbar main road. Suddenly, she developed labour pain and gave birth to twin girls on the road.
When women of the locality learnt about the matter, they rushed to the spot and cordoned Rebati and the newborns with sarees. Later, mother and the babies were taken to the hospital in 108 ambulance.
Dr Mishra checked the condition of Rebati and the babies and said the three were fine.
When contacted, Dr Mishra said she had told Rebati to get admitted to the hospital as her health condition was not good. But she did not follow her advice.
ASHA worker of Humbar village Laxmi Behera said she had asked Rebati Tuesday morning to come to the hospital with her but she declined.
Meanwhile, residents of the area demanded a probe to find out the reason behind Rebati’s walking the long distance though the ASHA worker had asked her to come with her to the hospital. The reason behind Rebati’s disobeying the doctor to get admitted in the hospital also raised doubts.
