Kamakhyanagar: A woman was hacked to death by her father-in-law reportedly over dowry demand at Samatangi under Kamakhyanagar police limits in Dhenkanal district Sunday.
The victim was identified as Geetanjali Sahu alias Sujata, wife of Prakash Sahu. The incident occurred after she had a spat with her father-in-law Pramod Sahu. Following this, Pramod hacked her to death with an axe. The incident has triggered shockwaves in the area.
Geetanjali’s father Bidyadhar Nayak lodged a complaint with the police alleging his daughter was killed over dowry. Police registered a case and detained the accused in this connection. A police team along forensic experts conducted a probe. Action will be taken against the other accused after completion of the probe, IIC Prabhat Kumar Tripathy said.
Police said Geetanjali of Gangijodi village under Tumusinga police married Prakash four years ago. During the marriage, her father had tried his best to meet the dowry demands of her in-laws.
However, Geetanjali’s in-laws started demanding additional dowry and inflicted mental and physical torture upon her. The complaint stated that the woman was tortured at the behest of her husband, who was working outside. As a result, Geetanjali often went to her parental house failing to bear the torture.
She returned to her in-laws’ house after staying at her village for two months. However, her in-laws again picked up a fight with her on the issue Sunday. Her father-in-law allegedly picked up an axe and hacked her to death. PNN
