Woman held for killing minor girl over sorcery

Lanjigarh: Biswanathpur police Sunday claimed to have cracked the murder case of a four-year-old girl at Balisara village under this block in Kalahandi district that took place five days back.

Police arrested a woman in this connection. Police probe revealed that the girl was killed over sorcery.

Superstitious beliefs are still prevalent in the area which a remote one. Indumati (4) fell to the superstitious beliefs of the woman. According to sources, Indumati’s mother Mati Majhi and her neighbour Sane Majhi always fought over some or the other issue.

Their enmity started 11 years ago when Sane was pregnant but delivered a stillborn. Since then, Sane believed that Mati hexed her and killed the baby inside her womb. Since then, she was hatching a plan to eliminate Mati.

She got a chance to kill the girl when her parents had gone to attend a function in a neighbouring village. She took the girl in her sleep and bludgeoned her, killing her on the spot. Sane then dumped the body and returned back home.

During probe, police learnt of the enmity and detained Sane who confessed to the crime, Biswanathpur IIC Kanhucharan Swain said.

A case was registered and Sane was produced in a court. She was remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected her bail plea.
