Khandapada, Oct 18: In a shocking incident that reminds one of the days of ‘Sati’, a woman jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband in an effort to end her life at Kusumi cremation ground here in Nayagarh district Sunday.
Victim Lipi Senapati (19), widow of Rabindra Senapati, sustained severe burn injuries in the incident and was admitted to Nayagarh headquarters hospital.
Sources said Rabindra, the only son of Shankarsan Senapati of Kumbharsahi under ward No.8 here, died in a road mishap at Hyderabad in the wee hours of Thursday. Residents in the locality were grieved after Rabindra’s body arrived at his residence Sunday afternoon.
Family members took the body for cremation and consigned it to flames when Lipi reached the scene and jumped into the pyre. Her relatives rescued her and admitted her to Khandapada hospital but doctors there referred her to the DHH after examining her condition.
