Ganjam: In a tragic incident, a woman and her nine-year-old son drowned while bathing in Ghodahada river near Panad village under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Sushama Maharana, wife of Duryodhana Maharana and their minor son Sudhansu Maharana.
The mother-son duo had gone to take bath in the river. Due to carelessness, the boy slipped and was dragged into the deep water. In bid to save him, his mother also went into the deep water and both drowned.
Family members grew apprehensive after the two did not return home and went to search for them. Sarpanch Bibhuti Bhusan Mohapatra informed fire personnel who reached the village and launched a search operation.
After a frantic search, the bodies were fished out from the river. A case of unnatural death was registered and the bodies were sent for autopsy.
