Nimapara: A 26-year-old woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her in-laws over dowry at Manijanghpatna here.
Simali Sahu succumbed while undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar Saturday. Her father Pabitra Mohan Sahu alleged that her in-laws served her food laced with poison leading to her death.
On the basis of the complaint by the father of the deceased, police registered a case under Sections 498 (A), 328, 304 (B), 302 of IPC and 34 of Dowry Prevention Act against Simali’s husband Nilu Sahu, brothers-in-law Bulu Sahu and Tulu Sahu, mother-in-law Malia Sahu, sisters-in-law Jhili Sahu and Reena Sahu, and began a probe.
According to sources, Nilu and her family members had been forcing Simali to bring Rs 2 lakh dowry from her father. As she failed to bring the cash, her in-laws began torturing her. They had served her food laced with poison last week.
Sources said Simali, who hailed from Mandiakud village in Balanga police limits, had married Nilu five years back and Rs 50,000 in cash, gold ornaments and household articles were given as dowry during the wedding. However, a few months after marriage, her in-laws began torturing her demanding Rs 2 lakh more dowry.
Last week, they tried to kill her by serving her food laced with poison. In order to present it as suicide attempt, the family members rushed Simali to Nimapara hospital. After her condition slightly improved, the family members took her home.
Meanwhile, Simali’s father took her to his house. She complained of acute stomach pain in the early hours of Saturday and her condition deteriorated. Her parents rushed her to Capital hospital. However, she succumbed while undergoing treatment. Simali is survived by two girls, sources said.
