Patrapur: A woman was forced to walk two kilometres with her newborn after an ambulance ferrying her got stuck on a dirt road connecting the village. The incident happened at Palaspur village under Khariaguda panchayat in Ganjam district.
Damayanti Sabar was seen walking over the muddy patch of the road with her baby in hands and was followed by relatives and an ASHA.
Family members admitted Damayanti, daughter of Seemanchal Sabar, to Patrapur community health centre (CHC) after she experienced labour pain August 19. After delivery, both the newborn and the mother were put under observation for three days. After improvement in their health condition, doctors discharged them.
Family members called an 102 ambulance and set off for their village. However, the vehicle got stuck halfway to their home due to the bad road condition.
Palaspur village is linked by a dirt road that worsens during rainy seasons. There is no concrete road to the village, locals said, adding that no one pays heed to their plight despite several complaints.
Recently, a contractor was engaged to construct a proper road to the village, but to no avail. The residents have been going through the difficulties for years. Most of the time, they walk kilometres through forests to reach the block headquarters for daily purposes.
A lack of proper road has deprived residents of basic benefits provided by the government, the locals alleged. They wanted the administration to look into the matter and provide a proper road to the village. PNN
