Malkangiri: Police Wednesday detained a youth for allegedly attempting to rape a widow in Kalimela area in Malkangiri district a couple of days ago. Meanwhile, his aide has been on the run in the fear of arrest.
The accused has been identified as Uma Charan Barei while police identified his aide as Bidhan Sutar who is reportedly absconding. The matter came to light Tuesday after the victim lodged a complaint at MV-79 police station in this regard.
According to the complainant, the victim was on her way to Kalimela for some work Saturday evening when the duo offered her lift. Later, they took her to an isolated place where they allegedly tried to outrage her modesty.
However, the woman managed to escape and alerted villagers who assured her to lodge a police complaint. “Based on the statement of the complainant, Barei has been detained for interrogation. A manhunt is on to nab the other accused involved in the case,” IIC Ranjan Kumar Swain informed.
