Purushottampur: Residents of Ranjhal village under Purushottampur police limits in Ganjam district beat up a youth and made him parade throughout the village after garlanding him shoes over suspicion of thefts Wednesday.
Later, he was tied to a tree and beaten up by the public. He was identified as Hrusikesh Panda of Purushottampur Hanuman market.
According to sources, Panda had strayed into the house of a villager to commit a loot Tuesday night. Locals overpowered Panda and held him captive throughout the night. He was made to wear shoes and paraded in the village street. Later, he was tied to a tree and beaten up the locals.
On being informed, police reached the village and rescued him. He was then admitted to Purushottampur government hospital. No police complaint was registered in this connection.
