Puri: A youth was hacked to death allegedly by his cousin at Tikarpada under Kumbharpada police limits Thursday night apparently due to heightened enmities over a long-running property dispute.
Police said after preliminary investigations that the deceased, Loknath Bisoi, 25, was killed by Santosh with the help of his three associates – Manoj, Bunty and Haribol. All the four accused are on the run. Bisoi’s body was seized and sent for post-mortem at the district headquarters hospital. A forensic science team visited the spot of crime Friday morning and collected evidence.
Sources in police said the deceased’s father, Narayan Bisoi, and his uncle, Kashi, who is the father of Santosh, had been at loggerheads for long over a plot of ancestral land.
The deceased’s younger brother, Debendra, who had attacked Kashi over the dispute six months ago, was released from jail on bail 15 days ago. However, he was staying away from home since his release and was hiding somewhere fearing attack by his cousin.
On hearing that Debendra came home Thursday night, Santosh allegedly planned to settle old scores with him. On the fateful night, Santosh went to Debendra’s house along with his three associates to avenge the attack on his father. But Debendra managed to escape.
Santosh and his associates then ransacked Debendra’s house. While returning, they met Loknath, who was coming home on a bicycle. “Santosh and his associates attacked him with swords and daggers near Sidddheswar temple, killing him on the spot,” said inspector-in-charge Khireswar Sahu.
“A murder case has been registered. We have launched a manhunt and are conducting raids at different hideouts to nab the accused,” added Sahu.
