Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for threatening and attempting to extort money from a woman street vendor in the IG Park Lane area, Capital police said Wednesday.
According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Suresh Behera, used to park his motorcycle near her roadside stall and demand Rs 100 per month illegally, threatening her with dire consequences. When the vendor refused, he verbally abused her.
Suresh later returned armed with a sharp weapon and again threatened her over the extortion demand.
During the investigation, police found sufficient evidence that the accused had criminally intimidated the complainant while demanding extortion money.
Acting on reliable information, Suresh was arrested January 13.
He reportedly confessed to his involvement in the offence. Based on his disclosure, police seized a sharp weapon (about 45 cm long and 7.4 cm wide) and the motorcycle used in the crime.
Suresh was forwarded to court following his arrest, and further investigation is underway.
