Puri: Purighat police arrested a youth from Khariar Road in Nuapada district for allegedly stealing at least 20 gold rings from a jewellery shop at Nayasadak in the Silver City here January 29.
Police seized six gold rings weighing around 30 grams from Kasim Kali (24). As per the complaint, Kasim along with another person had reached the jewellery shop, Trahi Achyuta, at Nayasadak on a bike.
Kasim entered the shop on the pretext of purchasing a ring. A salesman showed him a box containing at least 20 rings to select an appropriate one. Taking advantage of the huge rush at the shop, Kasim stole the box and fled the spot by riding pillion with his aide.
The salesman had chased the duo but failed to catch them. Bishwanath Datta, owner of the jewellery shop, had lodged a complaint with Purighat police.
“We managed to know Kasim’s bike number from the CCTV footage and arrested him. We have information that quite a few youths from the locality are involved in similar kinds of theft cases in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Steps are being taken to arrest them,” said Purighat IIC Tapas Kumar Pradhan.
