Bhubaneswar: Delivering the 16th lecture of Odisha Knowledge Hub (OKH) at the Secretariat here Friday, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus said zero poverty is possible but cannot be achieved only through government money.
“It can be achieved through appropriate policy, institutions and strong willingness. Zero poverty, zero unemployment and zero carbon emission; a world of three zeros, are not mere academic concepts. They are jobs and can be realised through joint action,” he said.
“Government alone can’t do it. The citizens also need to contribute towards these three zeroes,” Yunus said. Citing the examples of nations like China, Bangladesh and Japan he added, “It is happening all over the world and we should pull together the experiences so that we can make it happen.”
Referring to the micro credit system as adopted by the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, Yunus said such social banking method has not only lifted lakhs from poverty but also empowered the women there.
Stating that such banking model has also been successful in different western countries, he expressed the confidence that the same model can be replicated in India and elsewhere for poverty elimination.
Replying to a media query after the meeting, Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary R Balakrishnan said the micro finance model initiated by Prof Yunus is a proven model both in Bangladesh and USA. It would help the poor in accessing the banking system.
