Cuttack: Even as a CBI probe is in progress into the multi-crore chit fund scam in the state, a fly-by-night company of Baripada in Mayurbhanj district has reportedly duped investors to the tune of crores of rupees.
The matter came to light Saturday after around 200 depositors duped by the chit fund firm, Basundhara Green Power Limited, reached the office of the Justice MM Das Commission here seeking refund of their money.
The investors created a ruckus outside the commission’s office after they learnt that the notice issued by the chit fund firm on return of their money was a forged one. Cantonment police rushed to the commission’s office and brought the situation under control. According to complainants, the ponzi firm had its head office in Calcutta and had opened its branch in Baripada in 2010.
The firm collected deposits from people by luring them with various lucrative schemes. Many people had deposited their hard-earned money with the firm between 2012 and 2013. However, the firm shut down its office in 2014. The depositors had contacted the company agents and officials several times asking them to return their money, but to no avail.
The chit fund commission sources said the firm had issued a fake notice. No case has been registered with the commission against the firm. Only a depositor had lodged a complaint in this regard.
“I have been contacting the firm since 2014 to get back my deposited money. I am not alone; over 200 people have been duped by the firm. We want justice,” said Bhagaban Maharana, a depositor.
