Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri police Sunday arrested a smalltime vegetable vendor who allegedly killed his wife December 31 night at their rented accommodation in Dumduma Housing Board Colony here.
Police said the man, Rajendra Singh, a native of Cuttack, is reported to have gotten into an altercation with his wife Sasmita and banged her head against a wall causing fatal injuries.
“Rajendra may have pushed the victim and her head hit against the wall and there are signs that he has also tried to strangulate her later. He was in an inebriated state and possibly didn’t realise that his wife had succumbed. The next morning, he has himself informed his brother-in-law that Sasmita had died. We are investigating,” police said. Sasmita’s brother Tapan Singh also said Rajendra was in the habit of consuming liquor.
Police further said that the two children of the couple had been away at their uncle’s place when the incident occurred. “Rajendra had left home to collect payments for the vegetables he had sold. He then got drunk on the money he had received from buyers. Sasmita was upset by this and got into an argument with him. That was when Rajendra attacked her,” they added. Rajendra was produced in court Sunday.
