Bhubaneswar: Students of the Farhan Ali Tennis Academy in the city, Rutuparna Choudhary and Ameek Kiran Batth crowned themselves in glory by occupying the top two positions in various age categories of the AITA-OTA Championships which concluded at the Kalinga Stadium courts here Saturday.
In the girls’ under-16 final Rutuparna defeated close friend and statemate Ameek 6-1, 6-3. It was a one-sided final with Rutuparna controlling the proceedings with some fine baseline play.
Then in the under-18 final, Rutuparna was again her dominant self as she trounced Asapu Jnanita of Andhra Pradesh two and love.
In the girls’ under-18 doubles final, played later in the day Rutu and Ameek paired up to trounce the Bihar duo of Medhavi Singh and Ayushi Singh 6-2, 6-0. Both the students of KIIT International School never faced a breakpoint on their serves and dominated the net as well as the baseline. They broke the Singhs five times in the match to run out an easy winner.
By winning the singles titles in the under-18 and under-16 categories, Rutuparna bagged 25 points each. Ameek on the other hand got 20 points for her U-16 effort.
It has indeed been a good year for Rutuparna as she finished with six singles titles in the season. Her singles titles have come in Kolkata (U-18 and U-16 in two different tournaments), Bangalore (under-16), Guwahati (U-18 and U-16) and the recent one here. Other than that she has also won four doubles titles. If she gets the proper backing, Rutuparna has it in her to progress to the very top.
