Malkangiri: Even as left wing extremists (LWEs) are losing their grip on the undivided Koraput district and the trend of their surrender continues, 101 ultras including their sympathisers gave in before Malkangiri superintendent of police Mitrabhanu Mohaptra at his office here Saturday.
All the ultras including 30 women and 10 minors belong to Kukurkund and Luler villages under Mathili police station. The surrendered ultras includes six Maoist leaders, two village committee members and two women of Dandakaranya Kantikari Mahila Sangathan.
A senior police officer said the Maoist sympathisers were frustrated with the ideology of the Red rebels and decided to join the mainstream to lead a peaceful life.
The SP said the surrendered Maoist sympathisers would be rehabilitated as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy of the state government. “The authorities will take necessary steps to ensure welfare policies of the government reach them,” he said. That apart, measures would be taken to facilitate development of the backward region, he added.
Police distributed blankets, sarees, T-shirts, sports items and study materials to the ultras on the occasion.
The Maoist sympathisers said they had been supporting and assisting the ultras out of fear. They surrendered themselves before the police in order to lead a peaceful life.
Police sources said over 300 Maoist sympathisers from various villages under Mathili police limits have so far surrendered before police over last one month. Another 276 Maoist sympathisers from other police limits in Malkangiri had also surrendered before police in this period.
