Deogarh: A 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh in Deogarh district over five-point charter of demands severely affected normal life, Monday.
Protesting the step-motherly attitude of the State Government towards the district, families displaced by Rengali dam project resorted to the bandh which disrupted normal life. The activists of the bandh, called by members of Rengali Basachyuta Surakshya Samiti, also picketed in front of government offices since morning to press for their demand.
The agitators have called the bandh over a five-point charter of demands including compensation and rehabilitation for dam oustees. The members alleged neglect of Deogarh district by the state government.
At least 39 bandh activists, including the Samiti president, who were staging protests were detained by the police.
Markets, business establishments, educational institutions and government offices have remained closed as part of the bandh. Vehicular movement was also affected due to the bandh.
The bandh that started at 6 am ended successfully with all other groups and associations extending their support. However, emergency services were exempt from the bandh purview.
The agitators threatened to intensify their protest if their demands were conceded at the earliest. Police personnel were deployed at major check-points to thwart any untoward incident.
