Berhampur: Arrested former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena will be produced in court after completion of his five-day remand Sunday.
In the course of these five days, police moved him from one police station to another and posed over 100 questions to him but were able to get answers to only 20 questions.
He was first taken to Bhanja Vihar police station and then to Gopalpur police station on the first day while on the second day police accompanied him to his native Gambhariguda residence for a search operation. He was kept for the last two days at Golanthara police station where he was grilled on his involvement in various criminal activities.
Police claim the responses are very vital and will help them build a strong case against Jena to nail him on various charges. Meanwhile, police registered two cases against Jena including a murder bid at Town police station and another of murder in Baidyanathpur police station Saturday.
In the first case, Jena is accused of launching a murderous attack with the help of his hecnhmen on Arjun Sahu of Bila Sahi under Town police limits, January 12, 2016. Arjun slipped into coma after the attack and is since under treatment at a Visakhapatnam hospital.
In the second case, he is accused of murdering Babu Satapathy – an associate of slain gangster Chicken Rabi at Chamakhandi January 1, 2014. Police initially suspected Babu to have died in an accident and had registered a case of unnatural death.
The cases were registered after family members of both the victims responding to police calls came and lodged complaints in the police stations.
He started his career from 1995 and unleashed a reign of terror till 2016 in and around the Silk City till he was arrested March 6. He shot to prominence after killing Budhia Behera near the city court in 1996, police said.
Since then there was no looking back for him as he eliminated one of his strong opponents Chicken Rabi in 2010. Since then, he has earned a reputation for being a ruthless mobster and was said to be running a kangaroo court through which he used to settle disputes in Berhampur city.
Jena is accused of pumping his ill-gotten money into various rackets like tender-fixing, sand lifting, real estate, liquor, gutkha trade and extortion from builders.
During his remand, police regularly conducted his health check-ups as per court orders.
Police are preparing the charge-sheets in these two cases and will produce them in court.PNN
