Rourkela: Police Monday arrested three persons for their role in the ‘honour killing’ of Amrita Singh of Park Hotel Lane in Lal Building Road here that took place in the wee hours of last Tuesday.
The accused were identified as Amirta’s brother in-law Arvind Singh (35) of Jawaltoli under Bhojpur district of Bihar and her elder brothers Ranjan Kumar Singh (32) and Sandin Singh (24).
They strangled the girl as she had married a boy of another community, the police said, adding a case has been registered and further investigation into the matter is on.
However, the accused trio has not confessed to the crime and claimed that Amrita died of chest pain.
According to police, Amrita, the daughter of Ananta Kumar, was in love with Nasim Khan, son of Yasin Khan, of Sector-3 area.
As Amrita’s family didn’t approve of her relationship and often tortured her over the issue, the lovers opted for a registered marriage at a Panposh court March 8, 2016. Nasim was working with a private company in Balasore and the two used to stay together whenever he visited Rourkela.
Meanwhile, the couple went to Bangalore for an outing when Amrita’s sister Sushila made a call to her and promised to solemnise their marriage at a temple if they came back early to Rourkela.
Accordingly, the two arrived at Rourkela railway station May 8 where Sushila was waiting for them. She took Amrita with her. The latter even attended a marriage reception of a relative the next day along with her family.
However, after returning from the reception, the accused again asked Amrita to leave Nasim with an assurance that they would find a better candidate for her. They strangulated her to death when she refused to give in.
They burnt the body at Vedvyas ghat and threw the ashes in a river to destroy evidence, police said. PNN
