Bhubaneswar: A person was killed while 14 others were injured in separate road mishaps in Nabarangpur, Nayagarh and Bhadrak districts.
The first accident took place in Umerkote block of Nabarangpur district where two motorcycles suffered a head-on collision leaving one person dead on the spot and another critically injured.
The deceased has been identified as Kailash Majhi and the injured, Ranvijay Sharma.
In the second mishap, 10 people sustained injuries after a passenger bus bearing a registration number that read OR133788 was en-route to Kumbharpada from Nayagarh. The bus skidded off the road and hit a roadside tree in Nayagarh district.
In another road mishap, at least three persons were grievously injured. According to locals, a car bearing the registration number OR05AA5145 and carrying a family from Chandbali, skidded off the road and plunged into a pond. On being informed, local fire services personnel reached the spot and rushed them to the Chandbali Community Health Centre (CHC).
Meanwhile, two persons were killed in a head-on collision between a police van and a bike at Arjunpur Square under Sonepur police limits on Khurda-Bolangir road, Thursday.
Both the bike driver and the pillion rider suffered fatal injuries in the crash and breathed their last on the spot. The identities of the decreased were to be ascertained.
Sources said the duo was coming from Bolangir to Sonepur. At Arjunpur Square, they rammed into a police van heading from Sonepur towards Rampur. The impact of the collision was so high that both persons were flung away from their bikes. They hit the asphalt road with a tremendous thud and both died on the spot. Incidentally none were wearing helmets.
On being informed, Sonepur police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The police have seized the two-wheeler and the van and launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident. After the accident, the traffic on the road was affected for a substantial period as some locals demonstrated on the spot blaming the driver of the police van for the incident.
