Rayagada: Four pillars of the Gaudaguda bridge on the Amalabhatta-Maligaon RD road in Rayagada block are caving in. The police have banned traffic on the bridge.
It is learnt that the first and second pillar from Amalabhata-end and the pillars (first and second) from Maligaon-end are going down. In 2012 too, the same problem was seen here. After media outrage, the RD department spent Rs 10 lakh to save the bridge. But the same problem reappeared this year. Since Monday morning traffic movement was banned on the bridge by Chandili IIC Udayanath Sethy.
Assistant engineer (RD) Chittaranjan Panda said that floor work was done in 2012. The present problem is due to the river’s increasing depth.
This bridge had been playing an important role in the lives of five nearby villages. They depend on this bridge for their day to day commute for earning their livelihood. Sometimes heavy vehicles like buses and trucks are also seen on the bridge in case there is traffic problem on the main road. PNN
