Malkangiri: Disgruntled with the ideology of the left-wing extremists, five Maoists Friday surrendered to police here in hopes of rejoining the mainstream.
The surrendered Maoists were identified as Muka Madi (30), Shukra Sodi (28), Bhima Kunjami (23) of Idikonda village under MV-79 police limits and Mala Kunjami (22) of Badigetta village and Muka Madkami (35) of Sudhakonda village under Kalimela police limits.
According to the police, the youths of Idikonda village were active members of the group under Malkangiri division from 2008 to 2015. They were involved in several criminal cases such as the murder of Madan Hantal of Karanjiguda and Bandam Suresh of Poteru slum and looting of houses of Busi Peda of Mangipalli, Laxmikanta Pradhan of MV-72, Raiman Pangi of Manyamkonda, Subal Bal of MV-41 and Narsingha of MV-126 villages.
Mala of Badigetta village was an active member from 2010 to 2015 in the organisation and was involved in the killing of Deva Madkami and Ganga Padiami of Badliguda, Feta Madkami of Mangipalli, Ram Madi and Soma Mankami of Kanhaguda villages and planting landmines on a stretch between MV-32 and Badigetta villages, according to police. Muka of Sudhakonda village was also involved in several incidents of murder, including those of Gurumurti Madi of Telrai, Ram Madi of Shingabaram and Penta Madi of Tekguda Colony. He was active from 2010 to 2015.
The surrendered rebels would be given assistance according to the policy of the government, police said, appealing to other Maoists to shun arms and join the mainstream. PNN
