Janla: At least seven thatched rooms and property worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to cinders in two separate fire mishaps in Madanpur and Angarapada panchayats under Jatni block here late Saturday.
In the first mishap, Nirupama Champati, a resident of Madanpur panchayat, was asleep when one of her thatched rooms caught fire at around 1am. The blaze engulfed five rooms within a few minutes and valuables worth over Rs 4 lakh was gutted, sources said.
“We are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the incident but we suspect electrical short-circuit could be one of the possible reasons,” fire services personnel said.
Madanpur revenue inspector (RI) Kailash Chandra Pradhan and additional tehsildar Biswaranjan Mishra rushed to the spot Sunday morning and distributed tarpaulins to the aggrieved family.
In the second incident, Binodini Mohanty, a resident under Angarapada panchayat here, lost her two rooms to a fire mishap.
“The incident occurred at around 2am. Neighbours spotted smoke billowing out from the house and alerted the Khurda fire brigade personnel. The firemen rushed to the spot and doused the blaze,” one of the neighbours said, adding assets worth Rs 40,000 had been reduced to ashes.
